Where Are They Now: Little League Icon Mone Davis Commits to Hampton University

About four years ago, Mo’ne Davis broke the internet and stunned the sports world after becoming the first girl to pitch a shutout in the Little League World Series.

Fast forward to today, Davis is currently a senior at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy in Philadelphia where she has played softball, basketball and soccer. Hampton University recently announced that she has officialy signed her National Letter if Intent to play softball and major in communications at the Virginia HBCU.

In an interview with the New York Times, David says her decision came after a cultural awakening which included meeting former President and First Lady Obama and speaking with Congressman John Lewis. “I just thought it was a perfect fit to be able to play with other girls who look like me or perhaps grew up kind of the same way I grew up.”

Angela Nicholson, head softball coach at Hampton, told Virginia’s Daily Press that the star athlete will play as a middle infielder.

“Having Mo’ne is great,” Nicholson told the newspaper. “I know she doesn’t want it to be about her, and neither do we. We want her to have a great experience and be like everybody else.”

She added: “But her status will come along with her. The press will come along with her, whether we want it or not. We’re blessed to have her and we’re excited for anything that will promote Hampton University.”
